Pit Bull is actually a term that is commonly used to describe three different breeds. They are: the American Pit Bull Terrier, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and the American Staffordshire Terrier. All of these dogs are in the molosser breed group.
These dogs were initially bred in England, Ireland, and Scotland. They arrived in the US through immigrants and were
often used as catch dogs for wild cattle and hogs. They were also used to hunt or drive livestock.
Today, Pit Bulls are loved by some and feared by many. Because of their strength, stamina, and determination, these dogs have sometimes been ill-used through the years. Many have been used in “dog fighting” – an illegal and cruel sport in which dogs are placed in a pen to fight to the death.
Although Pit Bulls have gained a ‘bad rap’ throughout the years, they aren’t all bad. As a matter of fact, when raised and trained properly, these dogs can make great companion dogs and wonderful, loyal pets. Because of their extreme intelligence and dedication, many are used as police dogs and even therapy dogs.
The average life span of a Pit Bull is 12-14 years.
Taking care of your Pit Bull’s health is extremely important. Since veterinary bills can be quite costly, especially in the event of an emergency, surgery, or sudden illness, it is a good idea to purchase pet insurance.
