The Doberman Pinscher are among the most common of pet breeds. They are very intelligent, alert and loyal dogs. They are also very protective of their owners and household. They were once commonly used as guard dogs and police dogs, however, this is not as common any more.
Dobermans are medium-sized dogs with a squared jaw, a large nose, and floppy ears that many owners often have cropped to stand tall and straight. Male dobermans typically stand between 26-28 inches tall and weigh between 75-100 pounds. Females are relatively smaller, standing 24-26 inches tall and weigh between 60-90 pounds.
There are generally four different color types of Dobermans: black, red, blue, and fawn. Their short-haired coats are smooth and shiny. Their natural tails are fairly long, but many owners have them surgically removed in a process called ‘docking’ shortly after birth.
Oftentimes, people think of Doberman Pinschers as mean, ferocious, and aggressive animals. That however, is not the case. When the proper love, affection, and training, Dobermans make great pets. Throughout the years, many of these dogs have been trained to be aggressive guard dogs, personal defense dogs, and even war dogs. However, because of their extreme loyalty, high
intelligence, and their short coat, dobermans have become popular household pets. Dobermans are great watch dogs and very dedicated companions to their owners.
Dobermans, on average, live between 10-14 years. They, like most breeds, do have certain health issues. Taking care of your Doberman’s health is important.
