The number of obese dogs is on the rise. In fact, according to a 2012 National Pet Obesity Survey that was conducted by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), 53% of the dogs in the US are obese or overweight. The percentage of dogs that are obese went down by 5.8% while the number of overweight dogs shoots up by 5.3%.

Dogs that keep an ideal weight reduce their risks of dying young. Maintaining an ideal weight could also help prevent the onset of many chronic illnesses in dogs, like osteoarthritis.
