Discovery Penalty for Unlicensed Dogs and Cats Capped at $150

Bethlehem Township has decided to cap the discovery penalty at $150 for unlicensed cats and dogs found during the door-to-door canvass. Instead of paying $50 for every dog or cat found, the committee decided to charge a maximum discovery cost of $150.

“We didn’t change the ordinance,” so any other fees, fines or costs imposed by the township or its municipal court, if the case ends up before a judge, will remain, Muir said.

The fee change was due to several cases in Bethlehem where animal owners had to pay thousands of dollars for their unlicensed dogs and cats. A man with seven unlicensed animals ended up paying $1,300 after bringing his case before the court.
