Corgis are great big dogs in little dog bodies. They are tough, loyal, and very intelligent animals that can make wonderful pets in the right home.

They were originally bred to be herding dogs in Pembrokdeshire and Cardiganshire in Wales. Because of the rocky terrain and harsh weather of the area, the cattle bred there were a tougher and more obstinate breed who would kick the larger herding dogs that attempted to herd them. So out of necessity, a shorter, tough dog was needed to handle the herding job. And that is just how Corgis came to be.

The name Corgi actually means ‘dwarf dog’. They are moderately long and low dogs. Their average height is between 10-12 inches tall and they should weigh between 25-30 pounds.

Corgis have medium length, short, thick, and a somewhat coarse outer layer of hair with a thick, soft undercoat.
They must be brushed regularly
to minimize shedding. However, even with a good brushing corgis still shed. They come in a variety of colors including: red, sable, fawn, black, and tan, with or without white markings.

Corgis are very intelligent and very loving animals. The breed has become increasingly popular through the years. Perhaps their popularity is due partially to Queen Elizabeth who always has Corgis at the Buckingham Palace.

A Corgis’ life expectancy is between 12-15 years. They, like all breeds are prone to certain health issues. Maintaining the health of your Corgi is very important and can add many years to his life. Purchasing pet insurance for your Corgi can help defray veterinary bills, especially in the event of a sudden illness or need for surgery.
