Obesity in Dogs

dog obesityAccording to a 2012 National Pet Obesity Survey conducted by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), 53 percent of dogs in the United States are overweight or obese. But the percentage of dogs suffering from obesity has dropped by 5.8 percent while the percentage of overweight dogs increased by 5.3 percent. These statistics show that dogs that were classified as obese in 2011 may already have been newly classified as overweight because of healthier habits.

Maintaining an ideal weight isn’t just important for humans. Dogs that maintain an ideal weight have two years of extra lifespan than dogs who are overweight. Dogs with healthy weight have lower risks of experiencing chronic illnesses like osteoarthritis.
